Improve Your Web Design Skills With These Tips

By Abby Delliveneri

For new business owners looking to operate a business online, one of the biggest expenses incurred is hiring someone to build a website. If you're a newcomer to the online business world, you can save a lot of money by designing your own website. However, you should never cut corners. Use these tips below and you can start designing websites like the professionals.

When you are designing a website, it is important to have proper spelling and grammar. In addition to running spell-check on your content, ask a friend or co-worker to proofread everything. Having good spelling and grammar on your website will help give it a professional feel and your visitor will be more likely to return.

Avoid using too many graphics. While graphics are important to give your website a professional, cohesive and well-designed look, using too many of them can create clutter. You should never use graphics simply to decorate your site; they are used to improve your site. Having the appropriate number of graphics that do not create clutter improves the usability of your website, too.

Give your visitors the ability to search your site so that they can more easily find what they are looking for. If someone cannot find what they are looking for right away, their next thought will be to look for a search field. Put this somewhere obvious and include a search button.

Build your website using a content management system. Knowing how to build a website using just HTML and CSS is good foundation knowledge, but this can only produce a static website. Web design has evolved into providing dynamic content. If you couple your coding skills with the use of a content management system, you can practically build any type of website that you desire.

Minimize the amount of clicking or scrolling visitors must do to access information. The more a user has to click or scroll around to find the information they seek, the more likely they are to give up looking for it. Aim for having at least 400 words on every page of your site by combining pages that have content that falls below this number of words.

The file types that you utilize for your website's graphics directly affect file sizes which in turn affect how quickly your website loads. In general, it is best to use JPEGs and GIFs for your graphics. While BMP and PNG files might be better for creating web graphics, these file types tend to use significantly more disk space. Convert your graphics into file types with more manageable sizes if you want to ensure that your visitors have a great user experience at your website.

Web design doesn't have to be complicated at all. Although some methods you try out might be a bit difficult, following these tips will work to simplify the process. So whatever your reasons are for wanting to get into web design, the above tips can assist you in building a beautiful site.
