Cutting Edge Seo Tehniques

By Paul Chambers

Have you ever heard of a term known as search engine optimisation? You may not know much about it but you can probably bet your competitors do especially if their website is sitting higher up in Google than yours. With effective search engine optimization (SEO) techniques your website can obtain a superior position in the search engines. To make an example, if you have an online shop that sells running shoes you will not sell much unless you have customers arriving at your website.

How do customers find your website? Via a search engine. Out of the big three, Google, Yahoo and Bing, Google is the most popular. It takes an estimated 70% of all search engine queries. People log on to Google and then type in the search box to find what they are looking for. Back to our example about the running shoes. If someone types running shoes into the search box a list of appropriate websites, namely ten are listed. Which website do the majority of searchers click on? Of course it's the number one listed result.

Prospective customers sometimes hit the back button and go through some of the other sites. But generally if they find what they are looking for and are ready to purchase, chances are they'll spend their money. That's why it's important to make sure your site is listed near the top of the search engines. And how exactly do you do that? With a number of tried and tested practices.

There are two basic methods of SEO. There is a process called on-page optimization which refers to your own website , and another called off-page optimisation , which refers to promoting your website via other websites. On-page optimization can be quite technical. To do this correctly, you need to know a little bit about how websites are structured and you need to have some basic web design knowledge.

To perform off-page optimisation you have to get other websites to link to yours. This works better if the websites are similarly themed to yours. What the actual link text says is extremely important. For example, if you were trying to rank for "white sports sneakers" you need a lot of anchor text related links directed back to your site, with the words "white sports sneakers".

If this sounds like too much effort for you, a search engine optimization agency can help you. They can carry out a promotional campaign for your website. Proper SEO take time, effort and money. There are things you can do that are good for your site and other things that can be harmful to your site. Read as much as you can on the subject and start doing a little SEO yourself. To move things on a little faster, think about hiring a SEO company.
