Discovering Tips On How To Repair Rot And Decay On Wooden Windows

By Damian Hounslow

When wood gets damaged, it becomes the favorite spot for beginning of decay. Once this happens, the timber may ultimately have to be replaced with a new one. This problem is very severe in places where humidity is high. To avoid replacing the costly wooden frames, it is necessary to have knowledge of how to repair rot and decay on wooden windows.

The main reason for dry rot is fungi, the spores of which attack the damaged portions of the wood. These spores go deep into the wood using their filaments, drain the moisture, eat the timber and start breeding. When the wood is dry, it shrinks and causes damage to its form. Over a period of time, it leads to heavy damage.

Timely detection of the rot is helpful to minimize the loss and counter the problem in an inexpensive way. Borates and epoxy are found to be effective to repair the damage. Some precautions can also be taken to eliminate chances of attack by fungi.

It is important to look for a change in color of the wood, for example rusty red dust in an area where there is a wood is a sure sign of rot. Also look for cracks or other signs of damage. If you see these types of things it is important to act quickly,

By learning how to repair these frames, you can save yourself a lot of money. This can be done by using Epoxy and borates to stabilize the wood in the effected area. If you see small areas affected by decay, use your drill and make small holes in the wood and then fill these holes with epoxy resin.

Borate only works in dry areas, thus the need to ensure the area is dry before applying it to kill the rot. Water will wash it off. With the smaller areas that are affected by decay drill some holes and fill the holes with epoxy resin. When you notice large affected areas, treatment will be a waste of time. You will need to replace the timber completely.

If the damage is more advanced than this, it will be necessary to replace the entire window frame with treated wood. This will be more costly and time consuming, but will ensure that no further damage will occur as long as the ventilation to the area has been improved. In summary, prevention is an easy and more cost efficient method to repair rot and decay in wooden windows
