Choosing The Better Sash Window Refurbishment

By Jonathan Redworth

Windows are always a reflection of the way a home is being cared for. Obviously, having windows that are sealed properly will keep out winter drafts which can be uncomfortable in bad weather. In addition, if properly cared for they will last for years. When they get in bad condition there comes the question if one should replace them completely or do some sash window refurbishment.

The cold of winter and the heat of summer will often cause damage to sash windows. This damage could appear in a number of ways, such as peeling paint or loose joints. It is possible, when contacting someone who is an expert in the business, to have refurbishing that returns the windows to their original appearance. This makes a tremendous difference both inside and outside the home, not only in the overall look but in comfort as well.

When comparing refurbishing with completely replacing windows it is, as a rule, cost saving to go the refurbishing route. However, in addition, one retains the original beauty of the architecture. Many of the older houses have very intricate windows that reflect the construction trend of that particular period in history.

The original materials used in the construction of these windows of older homes is almost impossible to locate anywhere. Keeping the original design, which usually was used to portray a certain effect, can only be done by refurbishing. One would not be able to find them on the market today. However, they can be duplicated and glass can even be cut for the needed replacements.

The different patterns of the windows reflect a charm that gives character to these older houses. However, more modern homes, although they do not, as a rule, have intricate designs, have sash windows that also need repair over time. When any windows needs repair, installing draught proofing on the top and bottom sashes will protect against the discomfort of cold or hot weather.

When engaging someone to refurbish windows in the home it is extremely important to check out the company's work record. Since the job will often involve intricate work such as sash pulls and lifts, re-hanging sashes, replacing glass and other things it makes sense that having an expert do the work is imperative. Such a person will be able to do the refurbishing and leave the windows in their original condition. The majority of companies engaged in this work have online sites that reflect how long they have been in business as well as the type of work one might expect.

There are times when a person puts their home up for sale and would like to receive a good price. A prospective buyer will, of course, look carefully to see what kind of condition it is in. If the windows look bad, with peeling paint or other problems and there is a hot or cold draught coming in it will not make a good impression nor encourage a sale.

Double glazing is one selection a number of people are choosing when having sash window refurbishment. This method not only insulates against the weather but gives extra strength as well. It is done by placing a piece of glass over the existing one and inserting a spacer to separate them. This gives excellent insulation against outside weather conditions.
